Hathras stampede total deaths updates
A stampede that started on Tuesday during a religious event in India caused thousands of people to rush out of a temporary tent, killing at least 116 and injuring many more, according to authorities. Following an incident involving a Hindu guru known locally as Bhole Baba, it was not immediately apparent what caused the fear. According to officials quoted in local news reports, suffocation and heat within the tent may have played a role. Video captured the aftermath, appearing to show the structure collapsing.
A top official announced on July 3 that the number of those killed in the stampede at a religious congregation in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, had grown to 121. The Office of the Relief Commissioner reports that 28 persons were hurt in the incident on July 2.
