The RG Kar Medical College Tragedy
It was precipitated by the barbaric rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College on August 9,2024. This death of the young medic horrified medics across the globe, they protested and demanded justice. Doctors had appealed to the government ti take concerns of safety into account with respect to this case, and have open discussion in such cases. The parents of the victim also urged for a speedy trial, requesting that the central government provide justice.
Doctors of the RG Kar Medical College launched a strike in the evening; they announced that until their targets were fulfilled, they would not go back to work. One major point raised was related to the live-streaming of all meetings with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for full transparency. Doctors were not pleased with the administration over how it was handling of Nirbhaya’s case and demanded their involvement in legal process related to crime.

Banerjee, even though agreed to meet the doctors refused their demand of live-streaming in Brazil for further discussion. Without taking a name as the matter is sub-judice, she said legal constraints. Banerjee however suggested recording all the meeting on video and if need, sharing it with teh apex court after taking its permission.
Amidst the standoff Mamata Banerjee shared her frustration over the failed negotiations and offered to resign saying she was “ready to step down for the sake of the people.” She reiterated that resolving the issue is her main concern and providing justice for the victim but added that maintaining public order is another priority.
